Disabled Student Commitment: Year Two report
The Disabled Student Commitment, referred to as the ‘Commitment’, was launched by the Disabled Students’ Commission in April 2023. The Disabled Students’ Commission is an independent group with a remit to inform, influence and challenge the nature of support provided for disabled students in higher education (HE). It was announced by the Minister of State for Universities in 2019 and funded for a period of three years. The Commission has now ended, but the Commitment continues to grow and advocate for disability equity in education.
The Commitment encourages HEPs to self-audit, with their students, any gaps in delivery, to action these and make progress in a way that shares expectations with their disabled students. It is adaptable to individual contexts, including the HEP’s starting point and available resourcing.
Two years since the launch of the Commitment, this report celebrates the HEPs that have achieved the Commitment, those that have signed up to the scheme since registration opened, and the progress made by named sector bodies. It also shares the work of the constituent groups that are taking the Commitment forward.
