In 2023-24, Advance HE undertook an original piece of research into academic leadership – how the sector identifies, develops, retains and supports leadership. As part of our Member Benefit Project 23-24: Growing the HE workforce for the future, Leadership careers in HE Professional Services is a review informed by evidence, examining data, existing practices and perceptions, which aims to identify opportunities for transforming how HEIs support and develop careers for their professional services colleagues.
Part of the project included the publication of a provocation, by Geraldine Harrison in April 2024, which sought to be thought-inducing and to prompt active thinking about leadership careers for professional service staff in HE. Here we have collated responses to the provocation from various sector bodies, along with Advance HE's response and a summary report identifying the key themes and talking points.
Responses below include those from:
- The Association of Higher Education Professionals (AHEP)
- The Academic Registrars Council (ARC)
- The Association of University Directors of Estates (AUDE)
- The British Universities Finance Directors Group (BUFDG)
- The Higher Education Strategic Planners Association (HESPA)
- The Organisational Development in Higher Education (ODHE) Network
- The Universities and Colleges Employers' Association (UCEA)
- Universities Human Resources (UHR).
Advance HE members can read the report and the responses below. Further responses will be added here in due course.
