Taking part in Aurora has been a genuinely transformative experience for me, both professionally and personally. The programme created an inspiring and supportive learning environment where I felt encouraged to reflect deeply on who I am, what I stand for and the kind of difference I want to make.
Inspired by the women around me
One of the most powerful aspects of Aurora was being surrounded by strong, influential women working across higher education. Hearing their stories, challenges and successes was both grounding and empowering. It reminded me that leadership is not one-size-fits-all, and that there is real strength in authenticity, collaboration, and shared experience.
Making space to think about what really matters
Aurora gave me the time and space to reflect in a way that is so often missing in the pace of everyday work. It challenged me to consider not only my ambitions, but also my values and how I can align the two to create meaningful impact within my institution and beyond. I came to recognise the importance of having the courage of my convictions - to speak up, to contribute and to trust that my voice has value. Equally, I learned the importance of creating space for others, of listening actively and of knowing when to step back and give others the floor.
Stepping back to rethink how I lead
A concept that has stayed with me is the idea of stepping off the “dance floor” and onto the “balcony” - taking a step back to observe the bigger picture. In a world that can feel increasingly complex and uncertain, this perspective is invaluable. It has helped me think more strategically, and to better support and facilitate meaningful, positive change.
Aurora has not only influenced how I see myself as a leader, but also how I engage with others and contribute to my workplace culture. It has given me the confidence to make a difference - for myself, my institution and the wider community - and the tools to share knowledge and champion others along the way.
I would wholeheartedly encourage any woman working in higher education to embark on the Aurora journey, no matter what stage of her career she is at. It is an experience that will stay with you, shaping your thinking, strengthening your voice, and having a lasting positive impact both within and beyond the workplace.
