First Principal Fellow in Egypt

20 Oct 2025 | Advance HE Professor Catherine Harper, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for the Student Journey at The British University in Egypt, is Egypt’s first Principal Fellow, a category of fellowship that honours academic leaders who drive excellence, innovation and lasting influence in higher education.

Professor Catherine Harper, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for the Student Journey at The British University in Egypt, has become the first academic in Egypt to achieve Principal Fellowship.

Principal Fellowship is the highest category of fellowship awarded by Advance HE honouring academic leaders who drive excellence, innovation and lasting influence in higher education.

There are only just over 2,000 Principal Fellows around the world, with 54 based in the Middle East and North Africa region.

Through her successful Principal Fellow application, Professor Harper has demonstrated a sustained record of effectiveness in strategic leadership of high-quality learning with extensive impact.

This milestone reflects both Professor Harper’s remarkable achievement and The British University in Egypt’s commitment to advancing higher education in Egypt.

Completing my Principal Fellowship at The British University in Egypt, having worked on drafts for years, was absolutely right. Here, I've been able to synthesise my experiences from a range of UK universities in a truly excellent institution that has afforded me the headspace to test and reflect with colleagues at the very pinnacle of their profession as pedagogic leaders, teaching practitioners and education thinkers.

“It has been a great joy to me to achieve the first Principal Fellowship in Egypt, but this is only the first of many. I would encourage others who feel they are ready to step forward and gain this wonderful professional recognition.”
