Advance HE is commissioning a detailed case for race equity that identifies the drivers and benefits of addressing racial inequity in the higher education sector. An invitation to tender is now open for institutions and research organisations with a fixed sum of £20,000.
The recommendation for the case comes from two independent reviews of the Race Equality Charter and is reinforced by evidence from the Equality and Human Rights Commission which uncovered ‘widespread evidence’ of racial harassment on university campuses. Data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) also highlights the barriers to progression experienced by Black, Asian and minority ethnic staff and their underrepresentation at senior positions within universities and Universities UK has called for “urgent action on racial harassment” in higher education.
This project will provide support and guidance to higher education institutions and leaders through an evidence review and development of a business case with a view to support sustainable transformation and culture change in line with equality, diversity and inclusion strategies and activities.
Dr Arun Verma, Head of the Race Equality Charter at Advance HE, said, “This project marks a critical moment for the sector in enabling and supporting higher education institutions to navigate difficult and sensitive conversations about race equity within institutions.
“The impact of this project is to provide institutions with evidence, tools and guidance to enable the sector to accelerate its work in tackling racial harassment and inequity.”
The deadline for tender applications from institutions and research organisations is 12 noon on 11 April 2022.
