'Leadership doesn't come naturally for a lot of academics'

17 Nov 2025 | Advance HE Professor Miranda Horvath, Director of the Institute for Social Justice and Crime at the University of Suffolk, shares her experience of Advance HE’s Strategic Leadership Programme.

In this video, Professor Horvath talks about her experience of the Strategic Leadership Programme, highlighting the development of a real community of practice with fellow participants, which has continued long after the programme had finished.

She advises those who are unsure of participating to "throw all your reservations aside and have a go because I learned things on the programme that I definitely haven't learned in any other aspect of my career."

She says, "I think the drivers from the University of Sussex perspective of sending people on these leadership programmes is the understanding that leadership doesn't come naturally for a lot of academics...they have seen the benefits of having the input from [Advance HE] to help their leaders grow and develop into their roles."
