Dr Eleni Meletiadou, Associate Professor (Teaching) at London Metropolitan University, reflects on how Principal Fellowship catalysed global impact.
Achieving the Principal Fellowship of Advance HE was not just a milestone – it was a catalyst. It validated two decades of strategic leadership in inclusive, sustainable, and digitally enhanced higher education and expanded my ability to lead systemic change.
As a Principal Fellow, I’ve been empowered to shape institutional culture, influence policy, and mentor the next generation of academic leaders. But more than anything, the fellowship sharpened my focus: to ensure that teaching and learning are not only excellent, but equitable.
A Fellowship that fuels purpose
Becoming a Principal Fellow affirmed that leadership in teaching isn’t secondary to academia – it’s central. Through this recognition, I’ve been able to elevate my work across over 50 countries, pioneering models that embed equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI), and sustainability into everything from assessment to curriculum design.
One of the most impactful projects has been the Inclusive Technology-Enhanced Multilingual Formative Assessment (ITMFA) model, now used internationally to reduce awarding gaps and improve outcomes for underrepresented students. During the pandemic, I led the creation of Virtual Professional Learning Communities (VPLCs) to support mature and international learners – an initiative that redefined CPD for academic staff and is now part of national and EU strategies.
From personal recognition to global reach
Principal Fellowship has opened doors to global collaboration. It enabled me to advise on curriculum reform in the UK, Greece, Cyprus, Ukraine, and Albania, and to contribute to major EU-funded COST Actions focused on digital inequality, resilience, and sustainable learning.
This recognition also led to my National Teaching Fellowship in 2024, and I was honoured to be named one of Barclays’ Top 100 Women in Tech for my leadership in digital pedagogy and gender equity. These acknowledgements are not isolated – they stem from a consistent vision and relentless advocacy for a more just and inclusive higher education system.
‘Reflection, Refinement and Reimagination’
The PF journey also demanded introspection. It pushed me to refine my leadership philosophy – one rooted in democratic and social pedagogies – and to explore areas for growth. As a result, I’ve doubled down on student co-creation, deepened engagement with neurodiverse learners, and focused on inclusive AI-enhanced learning.
Innovations like digital storytelling, multilingual assessment, and reflective e-portfolios are no longer experimental in my teaching – they’re foundational. These tools help bridge the digital divide and support learners from all backgrounds to thrive.
Looking ahead: professorial leadership with purpose
I see the Principal Fellowship not as an endpoint, but as a springboard. My aim is to continue shaping institutional strategy and pedagogic innovation – this time from a professorial platform. I want to support others to lead with purpose, embedding EDI and sustainability as core values, not add-ons.
My journey is grounded not in titles but in transformation – of learners, of systems, and of the future of higher education itself. That is the true power of Principal Fellowship.
