Misbha Khanum, Equality Lead at Swansea University, reflects on her experience of Advance HE’s Diversifying Leadership programme.

I attended the Diversifying Leadership Programme last year, and it has been the most impactful and meaningful leadership development experience I have undertaken to date.

Creating space for honest conversations on race and ethnicity

One of the most distinctive and valuable aspects of the programme was its explicit focus on race and ethnicity. Although I have worked in equality, diversity and inclusion for many years, I had not previously experienced a dedicated space where I could openly reflect on and discuss the barriers I had personally encountered as a result of my ethnicity. The programme created a psychologically safe environment where these conversations could take place honestly and constructively, which was both empowering and long overdue.

The power of shared lived experiences

A particularly powerful element was the validation of lived experiences. Hearing others articulate challenges similar to my own was both reassuring and affirming. It reduced the sense of isolation that can sometimes accompany these experiences and reinforced that these challenges are systemic rather than individual. This shared understanding fostered a strong sense of connection and solidarity within the cohort.

The diversity of perspectives within the group, alongside input from external speakers and facilitators, added significant depth to the learning experience. Listening to a range of lived experiences and leadership journeys provided valuable insight and challenged me to reflect critically on my own approach to leadership. It also enabled me to learn practical strategies that I could adapt and apply within my own professional context.

Understanding the role of culture in leadership

The Diversifying Leadership programme also deepened my understanding of the role of culture in leadership. It encouraged reflection on how cultural identity shapes leadership style, decision-making, communication and perceptions within the workplace. This has helped me to lead more authentically while also being more aware of how I navigate different organisational contexts.

Practical growth through Action Learning Sets

The Action Learning Sets were another key strength of the programme. They brought real, complex workplace challenges into the learning environment and provided a structured yet supportive approach to problem-solving. Engaging in these sessions allowed me not only to gain different perspectives on my own challenges but also to develop my ability to support others in thinking through theirs. The practical nature of this approach meant that learning could be directly translated into action in the workplace.

Building confidence and recognising achievement

An important personal takeaway was the emphasis on recognising and celebrating achievements. I reflected on how often I had downplayed my own contributions and the importance of being visible as a leader. The programme encouraged me to confidently articulate my strengths, advocate for myself, and recognise the value I bring. This shift in mindset has had a lasting impact on my confidence and professional presence.

A lasting impact

Overall, the Diversifying Leadership programme was a transformative experience. It broadened my perspective, strengthened my leadership capability and provided me with a renewed sense of confidence and purpose. I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking to develop their leadership in a way that is reflective, inclusive and grounded in lived experience.

Applications are now open for Diversifying Leadership. The programme is designed to support early-career academics and professional services staff from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds who are about to take their first steps into a leadership role. Find out more
