Dr Letetia Addison, Project Officer at The University of the West Indies (UWI) discusses leadership, professional recognition and Senior Fellowship.
In the rapidly evolving landscape of higher education (HE), staying ahead of emerging trends is crucial for educators, administrators and institutions alike. The pursuit of professional recognition, particularly through Senior Fellowship, has become a cornerstone in advancing one’s career and contributing to the broader educational community. In this blog, I reflect on my journey towards achieving Senior Fellowship, its significance within the context of The University of the West Indies (UWI) and the wider HE developments across Trinidad and Tobago.
Current trends in higher education
Current trends in HE emphasise data-driven decision-making, interdisciplinary collaborations, diversity and the integration of technology into teaching and learning. At The UWI, these trends are critical to the “Revenue Revolution” strategic plan, aimed at aligning institutional strategies with student needs, and the increasing focus on student retention through predictive analytics and strategic planning.
As a Project Officer and Lecturer in Statistics, my work has been deeply intertwined with these trends. Leading projects which utilise data to inform strategic initiatives, such as student retention and curriculum reform, has allowed me to contribute significantly to the institution’s goals. Moreover, my role as a Women in Data Science (WiDS) Trinidad and Tobago Ambassador highlights a broader trend in HE that emphasises diversity, equity and inclusion, particularly in STEM fields. This aligns with a global movement towards creating more inclusive educational environments with participation from underrepresented groups.
The value and importance of professional recognition
Achieving Senior Fellowship is not just a personal milestone; it is a recognition of one’s commitment to the profession and the impact of one’s work on students and colleagues. Professional recognition in HE serves as a validation of one’s expertise, leadership and influence in the field. It opens doors to new opportunities, fosters a culture of excellence and encourages continuous professional development.
At The UWI, my journey to Senior Fellowship involved leading initiatives that significantly impacted teaching and learning practices across the institution. For example, my leadership in the coordination and establishment of the Mathematics Help Centre (MHC) to assist students with mathematics and statistics course challenges across faculties, demonstrated tangible benefits. These initiatives not only improved student performance outcomes but also inspired my colleagues to adopt similar approaches in their teaching practices. In addition, my leadership as a WiDS Ambassador highlighted my role in advancing gender diversity in STEM fields, supporting the importance of professional recognition.
Leadership and influence on colleagues’ practice in teaching and learning
Leadership in HE extends beyond administrative roles; it involves mentoring, guiding and influencing colleagues to enhance their teaching practices and, by extension, student learning outcomes. Throughout my career at The UWI, I have taken on various leadership roles that have allowed me to influence the teaching and learning landscape significantly. Whether through leading data-driven projects, spearheading curriculum reforms, or mentoring colleagues in innovative teaching methods, my focus has always been on fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
One of the key projects that highlighted my leadership was the redesign of graduate statistics courses to incorporate project-based assessments and real-world applications. This approach not only enhanced student engagement but also set a new standard for course delivery across departments. By sharing these strategies with colleagues, I contributed to a shift in teaching practices that emphasised practical, student-centred learning. My influence as a leader extends beyond individual projects to a broader impact on the institution’s teaching and learning culture.
As a WiDS Ambassador, I have further expanded my leadership influence by promoting gender diversity and empowering women in data science across Trinidad and Tobago and beyond. Through workshops, mentorship programmes and strategic partnerships, I have created opportunities for women to excel in data science, a field traditionally dominated by men. This initiative not only addresses a critical need within the STEM community but also serves as a model for how professional recognition can be leveraged to drive social change.
Future plans and the impact of Senior Fellowship
Looking ahead, my Senior Fellowship will serve as a foundation for further contributions to The UWI and the wider HE community. I plan to continue leading initiatives that align with the institution’s strategic goals, particularly in areas such as curriculum development, interdisciplinary research and student support.
My role as a Senior Fellow also positions me to mentor emerging educators, helping them to navigate the complexities of HE and achieve their professional goals.
I plan to use my Senior Fellowship to foster collaboration between academia and industry, especially in data science and technology, to drive innovation and address challenges. These collaborations create real-world learning opportunities for students and educators.
Senior Fellowship is not just a recognition of past achievements but a foundation for future contributions, emphasising the evolving role of educators as leaders and mentors. Through professional recognition, we validate our efforts and commit to lasting impact on institutions and education.
