Advance HE and QAA are delighted to announce the publication of 18 practice guides designed to support institutions enable Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
These short, practice-based guides are informed by current practice and have been generously provided by colleagues from across the sector to support and inspire others. The guides cover a range of activities in terms of scale, scope and audience from single staff development workshops through to longer term community engagement projects. The guides focus on the student experience and encompass:
- Teaching, Learning and Assessment: Practical guidance that demonstrate how to integrate ESD into teaching learning and assessment practice.
- Staff Development: Practical guidance that demonstrate how to support academics in developing the confidence and knowledge to integrate sustainable development into their teaching practice.
- Extra-curricular activities: Practical guidance for developing extra or co-curricular activities that extend ESD or learning about the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) beyond the curriculum.
- Staff-student or student-led projects: Practical guidance for supporting students to lead projects that address sustainability issues within and beyond the curriculum
The world is at a tipping point. Higher education has a pivotal role in addressing the interconnected challenges we are facing, requiring an urgent interdisciplinary response involving educators and students. Education for Sustainable Development(ESD) supports students in developing the competencies, the skills, attributes and values, needed to address these complex or ‘wicked’ problems and motivate them to pursue visions of the future, co-design solutions and drive change. We encourage you to adopt and adapt these guides to your own subject and context and empower your students to contribute to a more sustainable future, transforming their thinking so that they have a positive impact throughout their lives.
