Student engagement: different things to different groups

11 Jan 2023 | Advance HE Advance HE’s Student Engagement Conference returns in 2023, hoping to answer what student engagement means to different groups within higher education.

Advance HE's third annual Student Engagement Conference will take place at Manchester Metropolitan University on 20 April - the first one to be held in-person.

The event is an opportunity to explore how different groups within higher education define student engagement, why they regard it as important, and how they are working to improve it.

Learning experience

"Students want far more than just facts and figures as part of their learning experience," said Advance HE Governance Development Manager Dan Tinkler.

"They want to interact with information and engage with their tutors. And that's just inside the classroom. Beyond that, they want to be involved in the decision-making within their place of study and to feel that their voice is heard."

This year's conference will build on two previous ones held virtually in 2021 and 2022. Some 87.5 per cent of delegates to the 2022 event said  they were either satisfied or very satisfied with the contents of the day.

Engagement is key

"This conference is one of the most important dates in Advance HE's calendar because student engagement is the key to students achieved better outcomes and having a better all-round experience," said Dan.

“The Covid-19 pandemic brought about a shift in the way institutions engage students and the cost of living crisis has brought about yet further change.

“This conference offers a unique opportunity to explore these issues with academic and professional service staff as well as students and to hear about the particular challenges they face as well as the innovative practices they have developed."
