Our three-day annual Teaching and Learning Conference to welcome over 500 delegates
Advance HE’s annual Teaching and Learning Conference has kicked off today at The Wave, University of Sheffield. Over 500 delegates are scheduled to join this annual conference which explores challenges and opportunities in teaching and learning, sharing good practice from around the world.
This year’s conference welcomes delegates from 19 countries. The conference comprises over 300 sessions, including 205 oral presentations, 40 poster presentations, 11 roundtables and five workshops.
The conference opened with a keynote address from Professor Philip Hanna, Dean of Education for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Queen’s University Belfast, who delivered a fascinating talk ‘AI in education: defining the challenges, shaping the solutions’. He addressed the pressing question of AI’s impact on education, dissecting the challenges across pedagogy, technology, and people, all within an environment of rapid change. He proposed that rather than seeing these challenges as barriers, they can inform a structured approach to the integration of AI within education. Day two of the conference began with a keynote speech from Associate Professor Dr. Eleni Meletiadou from London Metropolitan University. She spoke about her work in developing multilingual approaches to teaching and learning as a way to help all students feel valued and have a sense of belonging at their institution, regardless of background.
She said: “Student success is not just about academic performance, it’s also about belonging, wellbeing and the ability to thrive personally.
“Cultural barriers start before students get into the classroom. It’s not about what works for [teaching staff] but what works for students and their lived realities. Ultimately, supporting the whole student is not something extra. It’s essential.”
The keynote speech on the third and final day of the conference was from Debra Gray MBE, Principal and CEO at Hull College. She spoke about how AI is changing what, how, when, and with whom students learn, and how educators can adapt to the new technology.
