Prior to her academic career, Esyin worked as a Software Engineer, developing the first online banking system for Maybank2U.com, Deutsche Bank and HSBC. Esyin had positive experiences of being ‘scaffolded’ (Wood, Bruner & Ross, 1979) by female supervisors to achieve more. As a result, she rejoined higher education to gain her MSc in Computer Science (AI) and PhD in Blended Learning, enabling her to lead impactful interdisciplinary projects, including those in technology-enhanced learning (TEL), enhancing teaching, assessment and feedback with EduTech, and encouraging more women into STEM fields through robotics.
Esyin’s earlier experiences in enhancing learning and teaching through technology were at Glamorgan University and Monash University Malaysia. In 2014, she trained and transformed faculties and students across continents: from conventional learning and teaching practices to integrate social media, online assessment and feedback and educational robotics innovatively (Advance HE, 2014; Chew et al., 2010 & 2022). Esyin has continued this work and is founded in her appreciation of Vygotsky’s (1978) Zone of Proximal Development and Freire’s (1970) Pedagogy of the Oppressed.
As the Director of the EUREKA Robotics Centre at Cardiff Met (2018-current), Dr Chew has led million-pound projects funded by governments, research councils, universities and industry in the UK, EU, Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia. This includes the recent integration of 14 cutting-edge AI-robots in universities, schools, hospitals and healthcare organisations, impacting thousands of lives. Her goal is to inspire students and staff to use AI in sustainability activities and social enterprise. Advocating thoughtful integration of service robotics in education, healthcare and agriculture, Esyin has impacted numerous underprivileged communities, particularly female students, female educators in robotics, engineering and data science, female academics and nurses during the pandemic, refugees and Orang Asli (Indigenous people). Esyin has also chaired the Global Partnership in Education for Women in STEAM-H (Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, Maths and Healthcare), enhancing international opportunities for ethical robotics and safe AI in education and research in the UK, Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, China and Norway.
