Dr Gary Mitchell MBE is a Reader in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen’s University Belfast, widely recognised for his transformative contributions to healthcare education. A registered nurse since 2010, Gary entered higher education just seven years ago and has quickly become a tour de force, combining clinical experience with academic innovation to reimagine how nursing is taught, supported, and valued.
He has led curriculum developments across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, supporting diverse student cohorts through inclusive, flexible, research-informed approaches. His leadership has shaped initiatives that enhance student belonging, digital literacy, and real-world application, from onboarding tools to peer mentoring and interdisciplinary frameworks.
A Fellow of the European Academy of Nursing Sciences (EANS), Gary is particularly known for digital education. He has developed impactful resources including podcasts, serious games and interactive e-resources. These innovations have improved learning, attracted significant grant funding, and generated scholarship shaping best practice internationally. His resources are used worldwide, and he continues to collaborate with partners across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America.
Beyond university roles, Gary contributes to national strategy through work with the Northern Ireland Practice and Education Council (NIPEC), the Department of Health, and the Royal College of Nursing. He also served on the NICE Clinical Guideline Committee for Delirium, influencing how complex topics are embedded in national standards.
