The 10th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME) Danish Technical University Copenhagen 4-11 July 2004

The 10th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME) took place at the Danish Technical University (DTU) Copenhagen during July 4–11th 2004. The conference was attended by approximately 2200 delegates with 130 from the UK including school teachers education researchers research mathematicians and others involved with mathematics education and teaching.

The opening ceremony included the awarding of the Felix Klein and Hans Freudenthal medals for 2003. These two new prizes have been established to recognize outstanding achievement in mathematics education research. The Felix Klein Medal is awarded for lifetime achievement. The Hans Freudenthal Medal recognizes a major cumulative program of research. The Felix Klein Medal for 2003 was awarded to Guy Brousseau Professor Emeritus of the University Institute for Teacher Education of Aquitaine in Bordeaux for his lifetime development of the theory of didactic situations and its applications to the teaching and learning of mathematics. The Hans Freudenthal Medal for 2003 was awarded to Celia Hoyles Professor at the Institute of Education of the University of London for her research on instructional uses of technology in mathematics education.
