Inclusive Leadership Programme for Higher Education

For aspiring and emerging leaders ready to shape the future of inclusive, high‑performing institutions

Higher education and research are at a pivotal moment. Institutions are expected not only to meet their moral and legal responsibilities, but to demonstrate - credibly and consistently - that they are creating cultures where every student, colleague and community member can thrive. In this landscape, inclusive leadership is no longer optional. It is essential

The Inclusive Leadership Programme is designed specifically for aspiring and emerging leaders in higher education who want to strengthen their leadership practice, broaden their influence, and confidently contribute to more equitable, innovative and resilient institutions. Whether you currently lead projects, teams, research groups or aspire to do so, this programme will help you step into leadership with clarity, courage and impact.

What This Programme Offers

Across two highly interactive sessions, you will be introduced to – and meaningfully engage with – the latest thinking, research and practical approaches to inclusive leadership. This is not a theoretical overview: it is a space to explore what inclusive leadership actually looks like in practice across complex, rapidly evolving university environments.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Unpack inclusive leadership – what it is, why it matters, and how it drives institutional culture, performance and inclusion.
  • Understand the drivers, behaviours and outcomes associated with inclusive leadership in HE.
  • Explore real leadership dilemmas drawn from the sector and consider how inclusion shapes your decision‑making, communication and influence.
  • Reflect on your own leadership journey and build confidence in applying inclusive practices day-to-day.

You will also be joined by two experienced HE leaders who will share candid reflections on their leadership experiences, challenges and lessons learned. Their insights will help you connect the conceptual to the practical realities of leadership in universities today.

By the end of the programme, you will have:

  • A clearer understanding of your leadership identity
  • Practical tools to embed inclusion in your teams and services
  • A supportive peer network to keep you grounded, accountable and inspired
  • A renewed sense of purpose and agency to influence positive change

Why Inclusive Leadership Matters Now

Higher education organisations are navigating a world marked by complexity, rapid transformation, financial pressure and increasing public scrutiny. Traditional leadership approaches, hierarchical, top‑down, compliance-driven, are no longer enough.

Inclusive leadership is a strategic capability. It strengthens institutions by enhancing performance, innovation and resilience.

The Opportunity

Inclusive leadership transforms the way institutions think, collaborate and deliver:

  • Culture: Moves organisations from compliance-driven diversity to purposeful, values-led inclusion.
  • Performance: Inclusive teams consistently outperform homogenous teams in decision-making, productivity and problem‑solving.
  • Innovation: When diverse perspectives are welcomed and meaningfully integrated, creativity and adaptability flourish.

For leaders, especially those early in their leadership journeys, this is an exciting moment to step forward and shape what comes next.
