Beyond the curriculum: Empowering student teachers to learn think and act creatively within the many curricula that impact on their experience

A research report exploring how student teachers learn to teach responsively and how highly detailed prescriptive curricula impacts on student teachers' progression through three stages of learning:

  • Task Managers - student teachers who when operating in the classroom demonstrate a main concern to keep the children busy regardless of what they are learning;
  • Curriculum Deliverers - student teachers who are motivated to 'deliver' learning but only as it has been externally imposed and without a clear rationale for doing so;
  • Concept/Skill Builders - student teachers who appear to demonstrate a holistic understanding of what they are teaching and what the children are learning (and why).
