Book Reviews: Statistical Consulting

I came to this book in the expectation that it might have been the ideal text for a course I once taught where the aims included enabling students to apply a range of problem solving techniques in practical contexts and to give them experience of communication skills in statistical consultancy. Indeed the authors state in the Preface that the motivation for the book arose from a course they teach where they focus on the themes of understanding the statistical consulting “process” developing effective communication skills and obtaining experience through case studies. This sounded promising. However on reading the book I realised that I would hesitate to recommend it to either of the two groups for whom it was written - students and statisticians who want to become involved in consulting activities.
