The Challenge of Integration-Conceptual Models for Inclusive Practice

A paper from the HEA Annual Conference 2009.

"There is nothing so practical as a good theory" Lewin (1951:169). This paper interrogates the integration of theory and practice particularly in those areas of Higher Education where studying for a degree at undergraduate and/or post-graduate levels involves both classroom and work-based study and the necessity of reconciling higher-level academic learning with high levels of competency of practice. The paper proposes some ways forward whereby using innovative models academics teaching on programmes which lead to employment in a profession can ensure that learners are involved in high quality experiential learning that makes them able and ready to "do" their professional practice.
