The aim of this project was to identify through surveys and retrospection the range of cognitive processes international students whose first language is not English employ when they are performing the various reading tasks required of them during their English medium university studies. This is intended to provide grounded insights into the nature of academic reading for international students in the UK university context. Successful extensive reading is essential to academic success for international students. Understanding the reading processes engaged by readers whose first language is not that of the texts they encounter has implications for instruction in academic reading for the use of reading matter in academic programmes and for the assessment of academic language use.
