In autumn 2012 a student-staff shadowing experiment was undertaken by the Acting Principal at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). It was designed to promote a deeper ethos of partnership in teaching and learning. Building on the success of this initial pilot a college-wide scheme was established at the RNCM in February-May 2013 funded by a small grant from the HEA.
In total 13 student-staff pairings were established of which nine were completed in full one half-completed one abandoned due to ill health and two failed to begin due to diary problems. The scheme involved each member of the student-staff pair shadowing the other across a typical day's activities. The participants' reactions were then recorded (independently) through a video blog in order to capture the flavour of the experience ideally as close to the event as possible.
