Developing insight into the complex world of diverse postgraduate classrooms

A presentation from the Internationalisation of Pedagogy and Curriculum in Higher Education Conference 2011.

Student national cultural diversity is increasingly becoming a dominant feature of the UK postgraduate classroom due to the drive for international student recruitment.

However such student diversity is potentially a far more complex phenomenon due to factors such as the student's prior work experience educational backgrounds and personal values. In combination these factors intensify the complexity of the classroom dynamics creating varied tensions and challenges.

This study is focused on understanding student profiles and exploring the challenges experienced by different profile categories in full-time postgraduate study based on the experience of Caledonian Business School (CBS). The aim is to listen learn and understand both the familiar and the unfamiliar voices in this relatively new diverse classroom context with view to enhance the effectiveness of the students learning process and journey.
