Disability services: supporting international students

International students make up an increasing proportion of students in UK higher education institutions. Research undertaken by ECU found that the majority of international students are unaware of the support offered by their institution’s disability service.

This leaflet presents the key messages and recommendations of the research. It provides practical actions that can be taken by staff in disability services to enhance the international student experience, and provide an equal and inclusive service for all students.

It suggests practical ways to:

  • raise awareness and understanding of support for international disabled students
  • ensure the disability service is resourced to support all disabled students
  • develop a cross-institution approach to supporting international students experiencing mental health difficulties

A further leaflet is available for careers services.
