Encouraging student discourse through the development of a scientific corpus for International Foundation Year students

This project aimed to facilitate Foundation level international students’ understanding of specialised subject-specific vocabulary in Chemistry (and potentially other STEM subjects). It also sought to develop linguistic awareness amongst STEM lecturers i.e. an appreciation of the linguistic challenges of their students and how best to support students.

The Higher Education Academy in partnership with UKCISA funded twenty ‘Connections’ pilot projects in 2012 on the theme of internationalisation of learning and teaching. The projects aimed to make connections between different departments services and institutions and with local communities. They helped to support international students studying in the UK as well as encouraging UK students to take opportunities overseas and on their home campuses to be more internationally aware.
