Dr Helen Walkington presented this keynote presentation at the STEM Annual Conference 2014.
Engaging with research is an important part of the STEM student journey. This interactive presentation will make the case for undergraduate research to be disseminated widely within and beyond the curriculum in order to develop student’s research literacy and other graduate attributes. Helen will share her interest in the possibility of undergraduate research publication for all students and ask participants to consider the ways in which Universities can provide the necessary space and navigational tools for students to successfully map out their research journey.

Biography:
Dr Helen Walkington is Principal Lecturer for the Student Experience at Oxford Brookes University. Following two years as a VSO volunteer teacher in Zimbabwe Helen moved into Higher Education teaching at the University of Reading where she trained primary and secondary school teachers. She has worked at Oxford Brookes as a Geography lecturer since 2002. Her work on developing students as researchers was recognised through the award of a National Teaching Fellowship in 2009. She became Oxford Brookes' first Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2012. Beyond her disciplinary research Helen's interest in the possibility of undergraduate research publication for all students has motivated her establish numerous undergraduate research conferences and e-journals for students to publish their research and she has been on the steering committee of the British Conference on undergraduate research since its inception.
