This case study outlines an initiative undertaken at the University of Dundee as part of the HEA's Recognising Teaching Excellence Change Programme.
We are faced with three central challenges which impact our ability to achieve such recognition: a research dominated institutional culture; lack of transparency in our existing criteria for promotion in relation to teaching & scholarship; and the absence of an agreed definition of teaching excellence and what constitutes the evidence required to demonstrate teaching quality. Our project is therefore institution-wide reaching across all disciplines and addresses both cultural change and the processes and procedures which need to be put in place in order to grow and nurture excellence in teaching to which the University is committed.
