Hybrid problem-based learning: a scalable approach to sustainability education

The environment and sustainability are major issues for government the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and universities. Universities include such considerations in their strategic planning and many have made a commitment to supporting the sustainability literacy of their students.

This collaboration between Keele University the University of Manchester and the University of Staffordshire aimed to explore ways to achieve this using a hybrid problem-based learning approach and ‘wicked problems’ and projects while addressing the issue of scalability without requiring an uneconomic level of resource.

The three universities have environmental initiatives embedded into their university strategies and are running successful modules on their courses. They sought to roll out the approach and sustainability materials to students across disciplines and to the wider HE community.

This project was led by Keele University.

Partner institutions were:

  • University of Manchester
  • University of Staffordshire
