Student experiences of first year practical in the biosciences may lead to misleading perceptions that they are unconnected to how research is done. Following a curriculum review we introduced a new module designed to reflect the authentic open-ended nature of bioscience research and to make practicals engaging and exciting. The new module also enabled students prepare for their research placement experience by embedding industry-linked employability skills. The outcomes of the practical curriculum change will be disseminated at this session along with lessons learnt and future directions.
