It's the transition that's troublesome

A presentation from the STEM Annual Conference 2014.

In this presentation our Stage 1 Transition Officer describes her role which is a new idea for the School of Computing Science at Newcastle University. Her key focus is on helping Stage 1 students to settle in and cope with their first year of university life. We also present the results of a survey of first year students that focuses on their feelings about the support they have received in the first few weeks of their degree and on the help we have given them in settling in to the School of Computing Science. The survey results show that the Transition Officer has been really effective in helping the students and that mathematics and programming are the key areas where our students are finding difficulty. The Transition Officer will then outline her work in the design and delivery of learning teaching and student support in all our undergraduate programmes at Stage 1 which includes organising remedial study sessions for students who are struggling and helping academic staff to increase the effectiveness of the assessment and feedback they give to first year students. She will also discuss how she supports activities for outreach recruitment and transition to university and manages a team of demonstrators.
