This presentation describes research examining the study of novels or 'set texts' by groups in higher education in schools and in public reading groups. Everyone remembers 'reading round the class' and approach used for decades with little account of its efficacy or of recent research on classroom talk for learning. Transcripts of talk around novels in each setting will be shared to consider features of shared novel reading that can stimulate deep response. How does higher education seminar discussion relate to practices commonly used in secondary education? Can informal reading practices enhance study of novels at university?
