Medication safety: learning through group work - HEA Annual Conference 2017 - Generation TEF: Teaching in the spotlight

From a Vygotskian standpoint teaching is complementary to ‘learning by participating’ say in joint activities such as in a workshop setting – the intricacy of learner exchanges are thus equally important as the teacher’s contribution. Our aim is to detail a collaborative exercise designed to engage healthcare students in an in-depth examination of a medication error case. Our objectives are to detail the development of the teaching session its use with pharmacy students then as part of inter-professional learning with nursing students reporting on student comments and overall satisfaction ultimately detailing how students learn about the ‘systems approach’ to patient safety
