NET2019 - Evaluating the impact of a comprehensive integrated simulation placement on Radiotherapy students’ clinical skills

This project implemented a comprehensive simulated placement for first year Radiotherapy students. Twenty nine participants were randomised to simulation or conventional clinical placement and assessment scores following placement were compared. Comparison of the scores demonstrated equivalence of learning. Students valued the structured approach of simulation and the opportunity to develop skills in a safe and unpressured environment. Results confirm that use of intensive simulation can enable students to acquire technical, procedural and interpersonal skills. Better prepared students will more readily integrate with clinical staff and optimise patient experience. The use of simulation may allow for reduction of overall clinical placement time, reducing the departmental training burden.
