NET2019 - Using simulation to enhance learning

Your patient will see you now: Simulation-based education has become increasingly effective in healthcare programmes. The introduction of a Standardised Patient (SP) role within simulations enhances students’ learning experience further supporting authenticity and real world learning. Historically the SP provided a voice via computerised high-fidelity manikins. However, student feedback found manikins did not provide a realistic learning experience. Standardised Patients now participate in face-to-face scenarios enabling students to become immersed in realistic clinical situations. While hands-on learning cannot be replaced, the SP collaboration enhances, critical thinking, decision making and clinical practice in a safe environment.
