This synthesis provides an introduction to widening participation outlining the evolution of the term and highlighting the key research reports and policy initiatives that have driven the widening participation agenda in Higher Education since 1997.

Connections between widening participation and related notions such as equality equity and inclusion are explained as well as how policy initiative in each of the four nations have driven forward the widening participation agenda.
