This article explores the issue of rewarding teaching excellence through a review of the literature a summary of current approaches in the UK higher education sector and a presentation of the views of academic staff in one higher education institution.

Questions considered are: what is teaching excellence; what sources may be used as evidence of excellence and what type of rewards would be valued.
