Preparing the ‘TEF Graduate’ for ‘super-diversity’: Autobiographical story-telling and transformative learning - an alternative to ‘failed multiculturalism’? - HEA Annual Conference 2017 - Generation TEF: Teaching in the spotlight

Aim: Explore autobiographical story-telling as a transformative pedagogy of ‘excellence’ to promote intercultural understanding among diverse student cohorts. Objectives: 1.Review evidence suggesting the failure of multiculturalism in HE 2.Review autobiographical story-telling as the basis for a pedagogy of  transformative learning which fosters intercultural understanding 3.Share initial findings of research project: The DREAM (Diversity and Resilience – Evoking Autobiography through Music) of intercultural understanding and belonging in diverse HE learning environments  4. Engage participants in paired guided story-telling activity 5. Discuss how this kind of pedagogy could be embedded in learning to challenge cultural relativism and foster authentic intercultural interaction 6. Share perceptions of the anticipated impact of TEF on transformative pedagogies to develop the ‘soft skill’ of cross-cultural capability.
