Reflective learning for the Net Generation

Reflective learning is essential for lifelong learning and a component of many undergraduate curricula but many Net Generation students do not engage in the process within formal educational settings since it does not align with their preferred learning style. The combination of familiar Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs and media sharing sites with multimedia motivates students to creatively produce digital stories that stimulate reflective learning. Digital stories present a personal and reflective narrative using a range of media especially photographs and video. In addition students can feel empowered and develop multiple literacies that are essential for lifelong learning. There are important challenges and implications for further research to the use of Web 2.0 technologies and digital storytelling. These include tutor and institutional responses to Web 2.0 technologies the assessment of reflective learning when multimedia is substituted for text the use of digital stories in e-portfolios the development of multiple literacies and the use of Web 2.0 in the wider genre of digital storytelling.
