Review of MM*Stat

MM*Stat is an electronic textbook (eBook) that is supplied on CD. No version number was evident in the review copy. Most of the material is viewed in a web browser and the content is based on the cross-platform standards HTML Java and Javascript. Strangely however it was designed to only work on Windows PCs and only with Internet Explorer (versions 5.0 or higher).

The eBook is aimed at students who are mathematically able. The mathematical focus is evident in the choice of topics – four early chapters (out of 12) are devoted to Probability Theory Combinatorics Random Variables and Probability Distributions but the final Regression and Time Series chapters are extremely brief. It is also evident in the approach that is taken to individual topics – most methods are described in general mathematical terms before applications or examples are mentioned and explanations are very concise. The eBook would not be appropriate for service course students with weaker mathematical backgrounds.
