Statistics and schooling

Some observations prompted by perceptive questions and comments from young statisticians at ISI 2005 and by the release of the RSS report April 2005 at http://www.rss.org.uk Although there have been and remain differences between the situations with statistics in schools in the UK and in Australia the similarities are sufficiently strong since 1990 for the key recommendations of the RSS Report on Teaching Statistics Across the 14-19 Curriculum to be as pertinent in Australia as they are in the UK. The comments below are necessarily brief and in overview mode rather than an extensive analysis. Some refer to Coherent And Purposeful Development In Statistics Across The Educational Spectrum; some are based on invited talks to SSAI branches in 2003-2005; and some on an invited paper Data Statistical Literacy and the New 1-10 Syllabus May 2005 for a teachers’ conference. (Ages in grades 1-10 are approximately 5 or 6 years up to 15 years.)
