Success in engineering mathematics

Several years ago at Harper Adams University College as in many other institutions the decline of the mathematical ability of students on entry resulted in high failure rates in engineering mathematics modules. As a result several changes were implemented which included: mathematics support diagnostic testing providing student handouts and changing the lecture content and style. These and other changes are described below. 2004/5 is the fourth year in which this system has operated and much evidence now exists to demonstrate the greatly improved student achievement progression and retention. Improved examination results external examiner comments student feedback and improved student performance in the subsequent years of their study are all indicators of the success achieved.
