A survey of student engagement

A presentation from the STEM Annual Conference 2014.

There has been a great deal of interest recently in surveys of student engagement as complementary indicators of quality alongside the NSS. Surveys of student engagement are widespread in Australasia and North America where it is claimed that they have had a positive impact on the quality of the student experience. We have undertaken a pilot survey of 250 Leicester students using a version of the AUSSE instrument adapted slightly for the UK context. This talk will present some of the results of the survey. We shall argue that because the survey gathers largely factual information about student behaviour rather than opinions based on ill-defined metrics the results have significant potential to inform policy decisions towards quality enhancement.
