Traditional laboratory projects using tried and tested methodology create room for experimentation

The project described in this case study is an example of a traditional laboratory project a 40-credit final year module undertaken as part of the degree requirements for a BSc Biology or Environmental Sciences. The project requires students to; critically review relevant literature; devise a goal and plan an appropriate study to achieve it; implement a study using relevant methodology and appropriate techniques; critically evaluate their own work; produce an appropriately structured dissertation; and communicate their work to a non-specialist audience. Included in the case study is advice on using this approach to laboratory projects and troubleshooting advice. This case study was included in the UK Centre for Bioscience Teaching Bioscience: Enhancing Learning Guide "Student Research Projects: Guidance on Practice in the Biosciences".
