The widening participation agenda and equality legislation have contributed to an increasingly diverse student population in higher education. To reflect on this and explore strategies to build and improve on work in this area the HEA held a summit meeting on Inclusive Learning and Teaching.
This reflective paper outlines the commitment and initiatives undertaken by University College Falmouth (UCF) as an outcome of this summit.
UCF are developing cross-institutional perspectives on inclusive learning within three cross-cutting themes: ‘removing barriers to higher education’ ‘building an inclusive community of learners’ and providing ‘staff and student opportunities to engage in internal-institutional and cross-cultural dialogue’.
This process includes the development of embedded evaluation mechanisms and is designed to ensure the knowledge and experience gained as a result of working with a high proportion of dyslexic students inform the best experience for the entire student population.
UCF is a small and specialist institution – with the recent merger with Dartington College of Arts producing a portfolio focused on art design media and performance. Participation in the HEA programme is allowing us to inform the development of post-merger shared curriculum frameworks in terms of inclusive learning and teaching.
