Updates from teaching and learning projects

The Structured Assignments project is a Higher Educarion Academy funded project aiming to provide students with a more in-depth learning experience than is often the case with traditional coursework assignments. Each structured assignment consists of two or three questions of medium length (they might be worth 6–10 marks in an exam) with spaces for the students to fill in their answers. The assignments come as a series and the idea is to gradually build independence of thought while all the time showing the student how to lay out answers correctly. The first sheet in a series has the bulk of each solution provided with fairly small blanks left for the students to fill in. As the series progresses the amount of information provided is steadily reduced so that by the final sheet only a handful of words remain as pointers and the student has to provide almost all of the working. Full answer sheets are also produced and the students will get to see these a week or so after completing the assignments
