Using international benchmarks to inform university strategy

Higher education is not immune to the continued march of globalisation which has already changed the competitive landscape for many sectors of industry and commerce. As a consequence university strategies need to look beyond local and national issues and define their goals and key performance indicators (KPIs) in an international context. When doing so it is important to be able to benchmark against other international institutions in order to identify our strengths and weaknesses and to be able to set realistic goals and KPIs.

This paper outlines the role that the QS Stars framework played in the definition of the 2013-2018 university strategy at the University of Huddersfield. The paper is also the preparation for an HEA workshop on university strategy to be held at the University of Huddersfield on Monday 21March 2016 where participants will be able to see an initial QS Stars assessment of their own institution and consider the implications for their own university strategies.
