Workshop and Conference Reports

The thirtieth Undergraduate Mathematics Teaching Conference (UMTC) took place at the University of Birmingham from 1st September to 3rd September 2004. 2004 was an important year for mathematics and education. Firstly the importance of mathematics teaching was finally recognised by the outcome of Professor Adrian Smith’s inquiry into post-14 mathematics education Making Mathematics Count (DfES 2004). Secondly October 2004 marked the official launch of the Higher Education Academy. Both of these events are likely to influence future UMTC conferences.
