The Writing Project: 'Bridging the Gap' into Undergraduate Study

The starting point of the study was an exploration of our own ability to adequately communicate the complex set of skills involved in writing. Our research quickly demonstrated the need to move away from the skills based deficit model of writing and to consider the complexity of teaching and learning writing within the framework of the subject discipline.

This case study reflects on a small scale enquiry currently being undertaken at University College Plymouth: St Mark & St John (Marjon). It is the initial phase in a research process designed to explore the different ways in which academics approach the development of writing skills within different disciplines. The aim of the study is to explore the most effective ways of enabling students to improve their writing skills.
