Student Success Framework Series Review and Redesign: Internationalisaton of HE

As part of our ongoing review and redesign of the Student Success Framework, this literature review and associated outputs focus on the internationalisation of HE.

'Internationalisation of HE' forms part of Advance HE's review of the Student Success Framework and centres around a literature review 'Internationalisation and students’ outcomes or experiences: A review of the literature 2011-2021', synthesising evidence about internationalisation and its demonstrable impacts on students’ outcomes and experiences in higher education. The review compiles ten years of research in peer-reviewed journal articles about internationalisation to unpack whether and how it is shown to make a difference for students’ experiences. The research was conducted by a team from the University of Manchester, which was led by Dr Jenna Mittelmeier (Senior Lecturer in International Education) in collaboration with Dr Sylvie Lomer (Senior Lecturer in Policy and Practice), Said Al Furqani (Postgraduate Researcher), and Daian Huang (Postgraduate Researcher).

Featuring over six hundred publications, the review illustrates 11 dominant themes in internationalisation literature since 2011, which are categorised according to their level of demonstrable impact on students. The review outlines known evidence about “what works” across internationalisation practices and highlights key areas where further research is needed.

Associated outputs include a blog, podcasts, webinars and summits.
