Advance HE leadership experts welcome the 51st cohort of the prestigious Top Management Programme

06 Jul 2023 | Advance HE Nineteen senior leaders are taking part in intense six-month programme to prepare them for the very highest positions in higher education worldwide.

Advance HE kicked off the 51st cohort of its Top Management Programme with a rich and varied programme that combines deep experiential learning with expert speakers from inside and outside the higher education sector, and a focus on building a strong and enduring community.

More than 60 vice-chancellors or principals in the UK are either current or previous participants of the intense, six-month multi-module programme – which has been the sector’s flagship leadership development programme for the past 20 years.

Top leadership positions

“Everyone who has been selected to take part has been identified by their institution as someone with the potential to take on some of the very highest leadership positions in higher education worldwide,” said Programme Director Louisa Hardman, who is pictured left with fellow Directors, Paul Gentle, centre, and Vijaya Nath.

“To thrive in such roles, they need to be able to lead and innovate with confidence, creativity and agility - and those are the qualities that this programme will help them to develop.”

Institutions and disciplines

Nineteen leaders from disciplines as varied as health economics, design and creative industries, global strategy and equality, diversity and inclusion joined the new cohort in London.

Participants come from institutions as widely dispersed as Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia, and Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland.

“During the programme these outstanding individuals from a wide range of institutions and disciplines will forge a powerful network of mutual support and development that will remain long after the course itself finishes,” said Louisa.

“As well as the skills and insights they learn during the programme, they will make human and professional connections that will be a key part of their on-going leadership journey.

“They will meet and work with some of the very best thinkers in the field and I have no doubt that they will be challenged and inspired by what they experience.”

Inspiring speakers

Among speakers during the initial week of the programme are:

  • Professor Susan Lea, Managing Director of Sagewood Consulting, and former Vice Chancellor of Hull University
  • Dr Anthony Bagshaw, Senior Advisor, Global Education Practice at LEK Consulting
  • Dr Zainab Khan, Pro Vice Chancellor of Education and Student Experience at Royal Holloway University of London and Professor of Higher Education.
  • Naina Patel, Chief People Officer, University of Arts London, and
  • Andy McGoff, Director of Finance and Operations, Edinburgh Napier University.
