Dr Anne Wheeler

National Teaching Fellow 2010 Anne has strategic responsibility for the Learner Development Centre and Learner Enhancement Team at Aston University. She also chairs the university CLD working group and programme approval committee and is the course director for the postgraduate certificate in professional practice. Anne leads on developing inclusivity in learning and teaching and the implementation of the institutional virtual learning environment and e-portfolio platforms. Anne has always had the highest expectations for all her students and staff, and as a result has led a number of significant initiatives at each stage of her career. As a senior, and then principal, lecturer in environmental sciences at the University of Wolverhampton, Anne developed suites of modules and novel assessment methods. In 2002 she was awarded Teacher of the Year for the development of a European module with international partners. Through her well developed links with the Higher Education Academy Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Subject Centre (GEES), and as a long-standing government appointed member of the Midlands Flood Defence Committee (an Environment Agency committee), she has continued a positive engagement with her subject. She has organised many regional, national and international workshops and seminars both in her subject discipline and on generic topics on learning, teaching and assessment. At Wolverhampton she became a Senior Learning and Teaching Research Fellow in the Institute for Learning Enhancement, working with staff across the whole university, stimulating and facilitating engagement with learning and teaching practice and research. Her research interests range from pedagogic research in experiential learning, international collaboration to enhance staff and student learning experiences and the effective use of technology enhanced learning. In 2009 she was successful in gaining, with international partners, funding of 1.16 million for the development of a professional standards framework for ecology and environmental management graduates in the Russian Federation. Also in 2009, after just one year at Aston University, she received an Aston Teaching Excellence Award for learning support in recognition of her contribution to university learning and teaching developments.
